Lorna's poem from Accra to Nairobi

From the promised land of Ghana,
Togo and Benin were our next ports of call.
Although small in size and population
Under the spell of black magic we'd fall.

Benin was home to a village on stilts
Lake Togo was for boating and fishing,
With voodoo made from bones and stones
A visa for Sudan we were wishing.

Nigeria was perhaps not as expected
Everybody so friendly and warm,
The African cup of nations we watched
Thrashing Cameroon went down a storm!

At Kwa Falls we joined in with the locals,
By swimming and having lots of fun.
A far cry from the Campsite at Abuja,
Which turned into a brothel at each fall of the sun!

Cameroon greeted us with potholes Galore,
Most seemed to be as high as Twiga.
Working as a team, we made our way through
Thank-god though they weren't any bigger.

Cameroon was stunning from start to finish
Lush scenery that would make Tarzan proud,
From the black volcanic sands found at Limbe
To Mt Cameroon always shrouded in cloud.

The white beach paradise of Kribi
Would be our last sight of the west
Authorities wouldn't let us travel through Sudan
For Safety reasons they knew what was best.

So to Nairobi we decided to fly
It took only 4 hours by air.
Doesn't mean the overland adventure is over
Just remember with travel you can't always prepare.

Nairobi was a shock to us all,
Tall buildings, Brand names and fast cars
Tsarvo west national park was next on the list
Soon we were sleeping with wild animals under the stars.
We saw Buffalo, giraffes, warthogs, gazelles,
Maneless lions, elephants, Zebra galore,
Travelling south of Mombassa to a beach called Tiwi
The wonders of Kenya unravelled themselves more.

After snorkelling off the coast with Dolphins
We headed to the next national park called Hell's Gate
Couldn't believe we ate breakfast watching Hippo's
Or believe we could hire bikes to cycle the park until late.

Uganda was the next stamp on the Passport.
Passing through to DR Congo for only a day
It was here we shared time with mountain gorilla's
The words to describe this are impossible to Say.

Back in Uganda we look in awe at the scenery
Remembering the wonderful hours spent in former Zaire
We all write home emails and postcards
Finishing with the words, “ wish you were here?”

The place for white water rafting
Is Jinga, home to the source of the Nile
What fun to paddle through rapids so rough
Especially falling out every once in a while.

Back to Kenya, the end of the trip for some
Lake Nakuru we stopped and looked in awe
Africa changes every corner we turn
We can only guess what next lies in Store!
