10th May 2008 ZIMBABWE UPDATE As a result of the current political uncertainty in Zimbabwe - The Foreign and Commonwealth Office ( FCO ) are currently advising against non essential travel . We are monitoring this advice on a daily basis , but at present - this means that all our trips which travel through Zimbabwe will be re-routed through neighbouring Zambia until further notice. We are in constant contact with our local agents and operators in Zimbabwe, and we hope to return to our original itineraries as soon as it is possible. Our altered itinerary will now take in the capital of Lusaka , with the chance to view the Zambian side of Vic Falls from Livingstone , and South Luangwa National Park - recognised as one of the best in the area. On our normal itineraries - we usually spend approx 10 days in Zimbabwe. We will also be spending a similar amount of time travelling through Zambia.
Even if the political unrest were to end soon - we have found that from past experience, it can take weeks / months for FCO travel information to revert back to its original advice. In saying this, we are pre empting the fact that we will have to divert quite a number of our trips scheduled for the coming few weeks.
If you are booked on one of our up and coming trips to / from Harare / Vic Falls from now until the 8th July 2008 - please note :
a) If you are starting or ending in Harare- please consult your airline and check the availability of changing your inbound / outbound flight from Harare to the capital of Malawi - Lilongwe ( or v/v ). If you are joining from here - you will be able to enter and experience Zambia with the group and visit South Luangwa National Park. Otherwise - your next option would be Lusaka ( capital of Zambia ) - but this is only a couple of days before the group gets to Livingstone.
b) If you are starting or ending in Vic Falls - check on the possibility of flying into / from Livingstone. It may also be possible to transfer by taxi from Vic Falls in Zimbabwe to Livingstone ( or v/v ) , but we advise you to check with your Insurance company on whether you will be covered under the current FCO advice if you enter Zimbabwe through Victoria Falls. The reason we recommend this is due to the fact that many travel insurance companies may deem your policy null and void if you go against any of the advice given by the FCO. Meaning that if even if your entry is for the purpose of a flight , your insurance will not be valid for the remainder of its duration. Please bear in mind that this option is not a guarantee and will only be dependant on the state of affairs at the present time.
For any trips starting / finishing after the 8th July, we understand that you may be in the process of organizing flights as we speak. Alot of people we have spoken to have decided to fly in / out of Livingstone - even with the uncertainty of what itinerary we will be using. It is very easy to get from Livingstone to Vic Falls ( & v/v) in the event that we revert back to our original itineraries. We will keep you updated with information as it comes to hand.
A single entry visa into Zambia costs £75 gbp for Uk passport holders - $135 usd for Americans - $50 usd for other nationalities. Along with rescheduling flights and this extra visa cost - we are aware that this will be an added expense to most. As this is an unforeseen expense - we hope that this information allows our clients to re - budget their spending money accordingly.
Our main priority is the safety of all our clients onboard , as well as our crew and vehicles. We have taken this step as a responsible measure and we hope that by being pro-active we can provide a smooth running trip with minimal disruption to our groups. In saying this - we hope that all will be fine again in Zim in the not so distant future and that we can return there to continue supporting the local people and economy that has struggled for so many years already.
28th Mar 2008 OASIS HELPS CHILDRENS HOME IN ZIMBABWE GROW THEIR OWN FOOD To celebrate completing our tenth year of trading (in November 2007) Oasis wanted to share its success in a tangible way with one of the communities we visit. We have been working with the Hupenyu Hutsva Childrens Home in Zimbabwe for several years now and are always impressed by the unfailing commitment of the staff and the happiness of the children , despite the material difficulties the Home faces. We have been taking in clothing, food, teaching and sports equipment for several years but wanted to help in a more sustainable way too. We spoke to the staff and prioritised the installation of a borehole on their vegetable plot. This will enable them to be far more self-sufficient in food production and the children will learn valuable horticultural skills. Their have been a few delays in the installation due to torrential rains (!!!) and sourcing some of the materials but progress is being made and we're hoping that it will be finished in the next couple of weeks. Some of our groups that have visited the Home have donated seeds and gardening tools (bought locally) and we can't wait to visit and see the garden in it's full watered-glory!
Oasis want to thank all our groups that have visited the Home and supported the fantastic work being done there. Many of you have made donations to this project and other projects we visit on our trips-thank you! For more information on the charities and organisations we are involved with look at our Sponsorships and Environment page.
28th Mar 2008 TIPS ON TRAVELLING RESPONSIBLY We are all increasingly aware of the need to be 'Responsible Travellers'. Here are a few things you can do before you head off on your trip.
1. Recycle, or dispose of unnecessary packaging from toiletries etc. before you leave home. Most of the countries we travel through have limited waste disposal facilities and recycling facilities are often non-existent.
2. Take a water bottle with you or re-use the first one you buy when you get to your destination.
3. Use rechargeable batteries/ wind-up or solar powered electrical items (eg. torches, personal music players) if at all possible.
4. If you've got even a small space left in your rucksacks why not fill it with pens/pencils or exercise books that can be donated to a local school or Childrens Home on your trip. Your crew will be able to advise you of the best possible place to donate them.
