Oasis Overland

Projects we support

Oasis Overland is committed to working with local operators and service providers and supporting communities with our trade. However, we recognise that we have gained so much from the countries we operate in over the years that we also want to give something back to those who are unlikely to benefit much from tourism. As such we support the following projects worldwide:

A typical classroom at the Sudanese school, Cairo

The Sudanese Community Development Program (SCDP), Cairo www.scdp-egypt.com

A school for Sudanese refugee children during the day and for adult education during the evenings. These children would otherwise have no access to formal education. The school is entirely funded by charitable donations having no access to any state funding. There is also a medical centre on-site. Our Operations Manager in Egypt is one of the schools Trustees. We have held fundraising events for the school in the UK, delivered much needed educational supplies and have recently helped the school to set up a Sponsor-A-Child scheme and sponsor a child ourselves. In 2008 we paid for air conditioning to be installed in the computer room which was unusable, due to the heat, in the summer months. We have also developed a link between the school and a school local to our office promoting opportunities for inter-cultural understanding. The children have written to one another telling each other a bit about their daily lives. When the school in the UK upgraded their computer suite they donated all their second hand computers to SCDP and we organised getting them there. The UK school also held a fundraising event for SCDP.

Sunshine Project International
www.sunshine-international.org.uk

Oasis sponsors a child at this project for disadvantaged   children in Luxor, Egypt. Our clients are able to visit the project and spend time with the children during our trips in this region and whenever possible our crew bring out requested items from the UK. The project was recently visited by one of our Directors and his own children.

Hupenyu Hutsva Children's Home in Harare, Zimbabwe
Oasis have made donations of  food, clothing, computers & sports equipment to this home & are involved in ongoing projects. We have recently ('08) funded the installation of a bore hole onsite to enable the Home to be far more self sufficient in food production & enabling the children to practise essential horticultural skills. We also paid for gardening tools & seeds. In Sept 08 and June 09 we provided an Oasis truck & three crew to take the children out on a series of day trips, finishing the week with a big party. Many of the children rarely leave the compound where they live & the trips enabled them to see some of the sights their country has to offer. We try to visit the Home whenever possible on our trips.

Soft Power Education, Uganda www.softpowereducation.com

We have a regular financial commitment to this organisation providing education to Ugandan children. We also offer our  clients the opportunity to visit this project. Some of our clients have returned to Uganda at the end of their trips to undertake voluntary work with Soft Power.

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Kenya www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org

This trust has played a significant role in the conservation of Kenya's wildlife & has pioneered strategies to reverse the extinction of the endangered black rhino & provides extensive rehabilitation programs for elephant, and other animal orphans. Projects include de-snaring, mobile veterinary services, animal welfare, water conservation & community outreach. Oasis sponsor an elephant, Kamboyo & three of our trips visit this project.

The Great Primate Handshake
www.primatehandshake.org

The Great Primate Handshake has been chartering a truck and driver from Oasis Overland since their first Handshake expedition to South Africa in 2008.  The GPH chose us as their partner not only for our experience of overlanding, but because of our policies on environmentally-responsible travel and our involvement in a number of African charitable projects.  Our truck becomes a fully equipped touring mobile workshop during the expeditions which now include Kenya and Uganda.

The GPH aims to help raise awareness of African primate sanctuaries and conservation programmes through the production of media.  They produce video, web and media content to highlight primate conservation to communities, schools and people across the globe.  Volunteers can join their expeditions to learn new production skills, work directly with primate sanctuaries, research ways to reverse the decline of primates across Africa and promote conservation education.

The GPH reports that primate populations across the world are in rapid decline with recent estimates suggesting that 25% of primate species are close to extinction.  Find out how you can help by visiting their website or check out their youtube channel for fantastic videos showcasing the GPH and their expeditions.

Pachamama's Children, Cusco, Peru

Oasis make a regular, monthly, financial contribution to this education and health project for Peruvian children and their families. A derelict school is currently being reconstructed and will be used as both a health, and, school facility for the local community. Our clients have the opportunity to visit this project if they want to.
