This is a general overview of our Regional Explorer Trips. Please refer to the 'Before you Go' section of the relevant trip page for more detailed information.
Our Regional Explorer Trips are from 8 - 27 days in duration and take the form of an adventure sightseeing holiday with opportunities giving you direct experience of the local communities. Travelling in third world developing countries, you will however need to be mindful and expect the odd hiccup along the way, so do not expect a completely hassle free trip.
Starting and finishing your tripWe recommend arriving a couple of days before your trip starts in order to acclimatise and give yourself a free day to explore the town or city you arrive into. Allow a day or two after your trip has ended in order to experience and explore these interesting cities as well. We can advise you where to stay and can book accommodation for you at most departure points.
Accommodation: Staying in mainly 3 Star locally owned, small hotels you will experience the culture of the various countries through which we travel instead of residing in large faceless international chain-hotels. Most of our hotels have en-suite facilities and in Egypt, Jordan & Israel many have swimming pools and air conditioning.
Meals: Where meals are not included, your Tour Leader will always point you in the right direction where you will be free to discover the local cuisine and they will often join you at the best places anyway! Most markets and roadside stalls serve a variety of cheap and healthy food to experience. If you're a Vegetarian, Vegan or have any other dietary requirements we will do our utmost to cater for you, but never fear, no one goes hungry.
Transport: The majority of travel on our Regional Explorer Trips is by road on public buses and trains, or in private air-conditioned buses, therefore ensuring your comfort. On our tours in Egypt we also use the air-conditioned overnight public train, fast ferry, and float down the Nile on the relaxing traditional Felucca sail boats. In Peru we also take several internal flights between cities allowing you more time to explore.
Oasis Crew & Group Info: We limit our group sizes to 18 people per Tour Leader (the minimum is 4) in order to maximize your enjoyment of local sites, and give you more quality time with your Tour Leader and the local community. We also hire fully qualified local guides for all included sites so you receive the best information about these and the local areas you are visiting. Although much of the trip is organised there will still be a lot of free time to explore at your
Inclusions & Free Time: Our Regional Explorer Trips also have many things included beyond the usual accommodation, transport and crew. We include many entrance fees and meals (usually eaten in local restaurants or hotels) - meaning that you have more funds available for what's important to you while on your trip. (Please see individual trips for Inclusions and Optionals). There is also some free time in each major town to allow you to explore the local community, markets, extra sites etc with helpful guidance from your Tour Leader.
Local Communities: It is important to Oasis that people travelling with us get to experience the local community as well as the geographical and historical sites of
the various countries through which we travel. We also place great emphasis on assisting the local community as much as possible - Please see our "Responsible Travel" section for more details. Thus you will find on all our Regional Explorer Trips there are opportunities for you to interact with the local community. From having dinner with a local Peruvian family on Lake Titicaca, to finding out about the families of the felucca crews supported by our business on the Nile River excursion, to visiting the Sunshine Orphanage in Luxor (sponsored by Oasis), there is plenty of opportunity to immerse in the local cultures & peoples of the regions we visit.
Passports and Visa's
You will need at least one blank page in your passport for each country you enter. Your passport must be valid for at least nine months from the start date of your trip.
Egypt - at the time of printing NZ, Australian, UK, Irish and most European Nationalities can obtain visas for Egypt on arrival, for approx. £10 each, however South African passport holders need to obtain a visa before they arrive.
Jordan - Most nationalities require visas, but this is included in the cost of the trip.
Israel - Most nationalities are free or do not require a visa.
Morocco - Most nationalities are free, however South Africa passport holders need to obtain a visa before they arrive.
Peru & Bolivia - UK, NZ, Australia, USA, Canadians and Irish passport holders do not require visas for either country. South Africans require a visa for Bolivia only however, these can be obtained en-route. You will need at least one blank page in your passport for each country you enter. Your passport must be valid for at least nine months from the start date of your trip.
Health
Egypt, Jordan, Israel & Morocco - it is advisable to be vaccinated against Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio, Hepatitis A and Meningitis.
Peru & Jordan - it is advisable to be vaccinated against Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio, Hepatitis A and Meningitis. Consult your doctor about having Yellow Fever, Hepatitis B and Rabies shots. The only areas we visit with a recognised malaria risk is the Amazon Jungle, but you should check the latest advice. You cannot be vaccinated against Malaria but there are a number of preventative treatments. Consult your doctor or a reputable medical clinic about these or any other travel related queries you may have.
Spending Money
Egypt, Jordan, Israel & Morocco - We suggest an average of £100 to £140 per week. Personal spending habits vary hugely depending on the individual. We cannot specify every cost however you need to allow for visas, drinks, occasional meals out, curios and local crafts, telephone calls, e-mails and items of a personal nature etc. Budget for optional excursions separately. Credit cards are increasingly easy to use in main cities, but we recommend you bring 50% of your spending money in cash US Dollars. Travellers Cheques can be used but attract high commission charges. Most historical sites give 50% reductions with a valid International Student or Youth Card.
Peru & Bolivia - We suggest about £150 - £200 per week. Personal spending varies hugely from person to person but as a rough guide you need to allow for drinks, 50% of meals, souvenirs and local crafts, laundry, email and calls home etc. Budget for optional excursions separately. Credit cards are only accepted in main towns & cities, so you need to bring spending money in a third US$ Cash and a third Travellers Cheques as well as a card. At the beginning of your trip your Tour Leader will collect the local Payment in US Dollars cash.
Local Customs
People in the countries we visit are usually extremely friendly and helpful, but please respect their customs and beliefs, i.e. respect local people's beliefs and sensitivity regarding photography. Both men and women should dress modestly when in small towns and villages. Women travellers should wear loose-fitting clothes that cover their arms and legs (this is especially relevant in Middle East countries, although on the Mediterranean and Red Sea beaches local attitudes are more Western and relaxed).
