Salkantay Trek

The new restrictions on the Inca Trail and its ever increasing popularity have meant that more and more, visitors to Cusco are turning toward alternative trails. One of these is the Salkantay Hike that departs from the village of Mollepata, about two hours from Cusco.

Less populated than the traditional 'Classic' Inca Trail, this trek has been described as one of the most varied hikes in this area. A trek set in amongst the spectacular scenery of the mountains of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, hikers are treated not only to the dramatic rise of the mountain chain that lies between the Urubamaba and Apurimac Rivers, but also to the magnificent Salkantay Peak.

What to Expect

The first days of the trek are spent high above the ground with spectacular views and a surreal sense of trekking on top of the world. The subsequent part of the journey takes trekkers through the lush jungles that lie between the rivers. Rich in flora and fauna and wholly different to any experience you have already had, this adventure is magical in itself. The Salkantay hike culminates in a visit to the ruins of Machu Picchu, which encompass the essence of Inca history.
