Los Glaciares National Park
Located in the Austral Andes in Argentina, south-west of Santa Cruz and sharing a border with Chile, is the Los Glaciares National Park. Locally called Parco Nacional de los Glaciares, this magnificent, protected area is a must-see for travellers to South America. Declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1981, it truly is splendid and visiting it may well be a life changing experience.
Scenically Diverse
Exceptionally scenically diverse, Parco Nacional de los Glaciares boasts mountains, natural lakes and woodland forest. In the west, visitors are able to bear witness to a large part of the Andes that is under snow and ice and in the east of the park are the Patagonian Steppes, a diverse habitat region considered to be highly threatened.
Named after the glaciers that form in the Ice Caps, a frozen continental extension area second only to Antarctica in size, Los Glaciares National Park has several enormous glaciers as well as multitudes of smaller ones. They are formed nearer to sea level than most glaciers and this offers a unique vantage point for travellers.
Flora and Fauna
The flora in Los Glaciares National Park is comprised of numerous endemics as well as a number of biologically diverse species. Growing in three, clearly differentiated areas, classified as steppe, woodland and highlands semi-desert, there is much variety. In terms of the fauna, there are over 100 identified species of bird, as well as many small mammalian species, although the area is chronically under-researched and little is known about the extent of its biodiversity.
