The Maasai Mara National Park is the safari destination that made Kenya the tourist destination it is today. It is home to Kenyas greatest concentration of game, and offers you the chance of seeing the famous Big Five: Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant, as well as up to 450 species of bird. The sprawling plains enable clear sightings of giraffe, zebra and the multitude of antelope species that graze on the land, and camping in and around the park offers incredible orange tinted sunsets usually only visible in films. The park is also home to the colourful Maasai tribe, a beautiful and proud people who maintain their strong ties with their African earth, and communities still exist within the dispersal area of the reserve. Game viewing in the park is excellent all year round, and the well known wildebeest migration that takes place annually is yet another draw card enticing you to experience this fantastic park.
Full payment is required upon confirmation of availability. There is a Local Payment fee of $160 payable on arrival. We will contact you upon booking request. Once requested your Add On cannot be refunded or exchanged.
Please note the Maasai Mara Safari takes place before your Oasis Overland trip!
Departure: Set departure dates; we will contact you upon booking
Day 1 - Maasai Mara
Departing our office in the morning we drive down the escarpment via the floor of the Great Rift Valley. We camp at our permanent Talek riverside campsite situated at the edge of the park. Here we have stand-up tents with beds for use as well as small wood cabins for those after a touch more comfort. Hot showers are available in the camp and meals are served in the dinning mess or in the open. In the night you can hear a chorus of different animal sounds as they communicate with each other in the darkness, more than a reason to visit.
Day 2 - Maasai Mara
The next day shall be spent game viewing. On clear days, the Mara offers fantastic orange tinted sunsets and you will definitely want to capture this moment while sipping on a sundowner back at our campsite. The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. One glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is typical savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife.
Day 3 - Nairobi
Depart Camp and drive through the northern part of the reserve viewing game as we proceed to the main Narok road where we stop to give you a chance to buy souvenirs, or just to have a cup of tea. We return to Nairobi by late afternoon.
To visit the Maasai Mara before one of our trips you will need to arrive at least 4-6 days before your overland trip departs. Oasis Overland can organise your pre trip accommodation and airport transfer for you free of charge - please contact us with your requirements. On the morning of your trip departure, youll need to arrange transport to the trek operators office. Check-in is at 8.30am at the trek operators office in Nairobi.
A taxi should cost approx US$25 (1500KSH) from Karen Camp, which Oasis use - see below.
Pre Trip Accommodation
Oasis use a campsite located in the suburb of Karen in Nairobi, 15mins from the city centre. Karen Camp is close to Nairobi National Park, located on large grounds with limited rooms. It is a 30 min walk / 10 min taxi ride away from Karen township - where you will find cafes, supermarkets and forex bureaus / banks & internet. A dorm room costs £9, single ensuite £27, twin non-ensuite £25, double ensuite £33. There is a bar, TV room & home cooked food is available. Oasis can book accommodation for you at Karen Camp as well as an airport transfer - see below.
Past clients have also used The Silver Springs Hotel for accommodation. This is situated at the Hurlingham Roundabout, opposite Nairobi Hospital and 10 minutes walk from the city centre. All rooms have private bathroom, telephone, TV and breakfast is included in the price. Bookings and payment can be made direct with the hotel; www.silversprings-hotel.com Tel. + 20 2 722451-7.
A transfer to Karen Camp costs US$26 per car - payable direct to your driver in either US Dollars or Kenyan Shillings 1800 KSH. Upon exiting immigration at the airport please turn right and wait by The Planet travel agency. Your transfer will be awaiting you as you exit immigration holding a sign with your name on it.
It is about 15km from the airport to the centre of Nairobi. If you have not arranged an airport transfer with Oasis, you can ask about taxis at the information desk in the airport. The black London cabs, which operate from the airport, have set fares into town. Other cabs are private and do not have meters so you will have to agree a price before you get into the taxi. The taxi ride is payable in the local currency, Kenyan Shillings, or US$ and should cost about 1800 Shillings/US$26. It is best to take the taxi direct to the campsite or your hotel so you can drop off your baggage. It is definitely not advisable to take a bus into town, as these are targeted by young pickpockets.

For this reason Oasis supports Tourism Concern - a voluntary and charity based organization. Their aim is to educate travellers on positive and negative effects that tourism has on local communities. Part of your trip payment is donated to Tourism Concern - who use such donations for organizing and facilitating new or current projects here in the UK and abroad.
For more information regarding the role of Tourism Concern and its involvement with other projects around the world, please check out www.tourismconcern.org.uk. We feel our membership is part of an important initiative - also supported by other organizations such as Earth Watch, Raleigh International and STA Travel.
