Abu Simbel is a real highlight for many visitors to Egypt. The twin temples were built in the 13th century BC by Pharoah Ramesses II, as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari. The complex has an interesting story- it was relocated in its entirety in 1968 to avoid the temples being submerged from the creation of Lake Nasser - a massive artifical water reservoir formed after the building of the Aswan Dam on the Nile River. The temples now sit, in all their glory on an artificial hill high above the reservoir.
You will depart Aswan early in the morning in an escorted convoy for the 3 hour journey to Abu Simbel. This will get you to Abu Simbel in the early morning sun light and you will have a guided tour with an Egyptologist guide, as well as some free time before the drive back to Aswan. Approximately 2 hours is spent at Abu Simbel, allowing plenty of time for photographs of this amazing site.
Transport and guide are included but you will need to budget around £10 for the entrance fee, which is paid on the day.
This Add on can be either pre-booked and paid for at time of booking your Eygpt trip with Oasis Overland or if you prefer you can decide later and pay your tour leader in Egypt.
