Overland Travel

Overland travel is an amazing way to see places as far flung and hidden as Machu Picchu and the pyramids of Egypt. Adventure travel companies like Oasis Overland offer a variety of tours that get you off the beaten track and out into the real world. Often travelling in fully kitted out trucks, these overland travel tours allow you to get involved and really be able to say that you became an explorer. Overland travel involves sleeping out under the stars, using the specially built truck to reach isolated places, getting to know a new group of people you are travelling with and having the flexibility to stop where you want and really get to see places we visit.

Some Practical Tips for Overland Travel

Overland travel is one of the most unique and exciting ways to explore a country or continent but can also be strenuous and does require some extra planning.

  • Pack light – Overland travel often requires hiking and walking, meaning that you need to carry your own luggage at times. Make it easier on yourself by packing light and not bringing heavy, unnecessary items.
  • Pack smart – Just because you are packing light does not mean that you can leave out certain items. Sunscreen and a hat are a must as you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. A rain jacket and warm clothes are also a good idea as you could be camping or even having to help dig the truck out of the mud. Checking with your overland travel company before leaving is a good way to get an idea about the climate and what you will need.
  • Pack your passport – Overland travel usually means inter-country travelling and you will need your passport to gain entry to each one. Make sure that you also have US Dollars with you to pay for each visa on entry and that there is enough space in your passport for each new entry stamp.
  • Pack your meds – There are no pharmacies at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, so you need to make sure that you have your own small personal medical kit. It is also smart to look up the areas that you will be going to on your overland travels to find out if you need to take any special medical precautions such as tetanus vaccinations or malaria medication.
  • Pack a phone card – The areas explored during overland travels most often will not have mobile phone coverage and you will need an international phone card. These cards allow you to use any pay phone to call friends and family back home and keep in touch.

I completely agree with your ‘pack smart’ section! I recently went on the Cape Town to Vic Falls trip and was so super proud that my backpack ONLY weighed 19kg (just under the airline requirements). But when it came to lugging that stuff around it was terrible! I should’ve left my blow up mattress and pump at home. As for something I would definitely include – a nail brush. Holy moly my fingernails and toenails needed it.

    An enjoyable piece. Thanks 🙂
