What is the Lares Trek?

The Lares Trek is a fantastic alternative trail leading to the magnificent World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu was long thought to be the Lost City of the Incas, but has since been proven to simply be a series of Inca fortress towns along a rocky mountain footpath. Still considered to be among the most beautiful of the Inca ruins Machu Picchu is well worth the trek.

The famous Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu can only accommodate a certain amount of people every day and is often booked up far in advance. The Lares Trek is a great alternative to the Inca Trail and offers another way to reach the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. Starting from the city of Cuzco hikers take a trip back in time through the untouched valleys with winding rivers and glacial lakes. The Lares Trek takes five days and includes waterfalls, lush vegetation, original Inca stone paths and hot springs. Camping on some nights and relaxing in a simple local run hotel on another, the Lares Trek offers the ideal way to get to know the real culture of Peru.

Some Tips for the Lares Trek

  • Some people can be affected by the change in altitude along the upwards Lares Trek. Prepare by spending a full day in Cuzco before the hike commences and drink plenty of water.
  • Porters are on hand to carry your luggage along the Lares Trek but a day backpack is essential with snacks, a camera, water, and a jacket and rain coat.
  • The temperature at night along the Lares Trek can drop below zero making it important to bring gloves, sleeping bags and thermal underwear.
  • The Lares Trek is quite a difficult hike making it a good idea to bring along a walking stick without a metal tip that could harm the delicate environment.
  • There are many craftsmen offering their wares along the Lares Trek so buy mittens or a walking stick when you arrive and support the local traders.
