Mwendo Needy Children and Orphan Project

The Mwendo Needy Children and Orphan Project (MNCOP) is one of many organisations in the areas we visit that do a brilliant job helping others with little funds or resources, so we thought we’d give them a plug here!  Some of our groups visit the project whilst in Uganda and we sponsor two of the children.

MNCOP is based at Lake Bunyoni in Uganda and provides and promotes the health, well being and safety of needy children in the Mwendo area.  The number of street children and orphans here is growing, largely due to AIDS and poverty.  Currently there are 559 registered children under the care of MNCOP, aged between three and 15 years old.

Children are housed amongst the community under the care of a registered guardian, typically a relative.  Living conditions are very basic with most children sleeping on a mat or directly on the floor and there is no electricity or running water.

The project works closely with Kakomo Primary School which has 7 paid teachers and 6 unpaid teachers.  Five volunteers work for MNCOP directly, conducting health education programs which teach the children about environmental health, preventative medicine and family planning.  The volunteers also teach sport, cooking, dance and drama and provide counselling.  The project promotes health care and the importance of education, encouraging children to stay in school and providing the means for them to do so – many children do not go on to secondary education as they need to work to contribute to the family’s income.

MNCOP relies heavily on the donations of visitors to the area.  Those who would like to contribute can do so during their overland trip to Uganda* and can either sponsor a child for US$40 a month or can make a donation.  You can also see more details on their website

*Please note that most overland trips to Uganda will include the opportunity to visit a project like this but it may not specifically be the Mwendo Needy Children and Orphan Project.
