Oasis visit to volunteer projects in South America

A very interesting day was had when our Spanish School in Quito took us (Mark from UK office and Mel our Tour Leader) to visit 3 of the projects that they and Oasis support with volunteer placements. The projects are all about half an hour outside Quito in low income suburbs. The first was a state school in a very economically deprived area where volunteers assist teachers with class tuition, especially English, and activities as well as paint classrooms. Volunteers who are placed at this school live in Quito in an apartment at the Spanish school and travel each day by local bus to the school. Stay in  a voluntary funded school for kids who are either orphaned or have been taken away from abusive or difficult backgrounds was next. Here volunteers, usually a maximum of about 3 or 4 volunteers, have their own basic self contained apartment within the school grounds and volunteers again assist teachers, but also help kids with their homework, especially maths and English, and generally give the children attention and affection. A street children project was last in a big old converted house. Like the first school, volunteers stay in Quito and come in each day by local bus and help the kids with their homework and encourage them to attend school. Oasis have one volunteer at this school at the moment.

The projects are all fairly small and volunteers need to have a certain amount of initiative. Placements are decided once you have completed 2 weeks of Spanish school and depending on your level of Spanish, aptitude and any skills or knowledge you can bring to any of the projects. One things is certain – more volunteers are needed and all the projects asked us to send more as the help and assistance is hugely appreciated and needed by the children. When we visited, the state school had no volunteers and the voluntary funded school only had 2.

Check out some of the volunteer projects that Oasis support & see how you can help.
