Oasis Crew and Travellers Support Lake Bunyoni Community

Market at Lake Bunyoni

Oasis would like to thank all our Africa crew and travellers for the commitment they’ve shown to the local community around Lake Bunyoni in south-western Uganda. This is a spectacularly stunning area of Uganda, described by ‘Lonely Planet’ as ‘beguiling beauty defying description.’

Over the years our crew have developed relationships with  community groups around Bunyoni and have become very involved with supporting them. Two of our crew in Africa have recently updated us with projects they are involved in, with the support of our Oasis travellers. Derek, one of our Tour Leaders, takes his groups to visit a Pygmy village, on the foothills of the Lake.  Over the course of these visits Derek discovered that the village really wanted to be able to purchase a piece of land by the lake and build two school classrooms. With the very generous support of Oasis travellers money was raised to buy the piece of land and work on the classrooms has begun. This will make a huge difference to the village and Derek  is hoping that further money can be raised to pay towards educational equipment and teacher’s wages.

Similarly, in the hills around Bunyoni, Iain, one of our Drivers, has been working with Eddison a local community activist to support a project Eddison has set up providing homes and daycare/schooling for local orphaned children.  Iain takes his groups to visit the project and there is time to play with the children, have a game of football and some good old singing and dancing, before a community prepared shared-lunch!

The community decides as a group how they would like any donated money to be spent and, most recently, this involved the purchase of two cows, enabling milk to be provided for the younger children. Iain tells me that he is hoping that  future donations can be used for materials to build chicken coops. The community grow most of ther own food but if they could produce surplus eggs to sell this would help them purchase other essential items like clothes and school fees. High school aged children attend school in nearby Kabale and the project also welcomes school sponsorship.

We’d like to say a big thank you to all our Africa crew and travellers that have been involved in supporting the Bunyoni community. You know yourselves what a difference you’ve made. As a company we strongly believe that travel should benefit local communities and we’re proud that our crew and travellers take this on board so wholeheartedly. Thank you!
