The Grand Egyptian Museum Fully Opening Soon

Egypt, the land of pharaohs, pyramids, and the Nile, has always captivated the world with its ancient wonders. And now, a new jewel has been added to its crown: the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). More than just a museum, it's a portal to the past, an architectural marvel, and a must-visit destination for any traveler seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Egyptian history.

The museum has been undergoing a soft-launch for the last few months, with the majority of the galleries open. However, the full grand opening is expected on 3rd July 2025, which is when the full set of King Tutankhamun exhibits will be moved from the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square.

For now, we are still visiting the old museum to make sure we see this display and the many other treasures still on show there, and will start including a tour of the new museum in all our itineraries after the grand opening. The GEM is located right next to the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, which will enable us to make a full day's touring here without nearly as much driving through Cairo traffic has been the case so far!

Optional guided tours of the new museum are available during free time on any of our trips now though.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE IN THE GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM

THE GRAND ATRIUM

The Grand Atrium in the Grand Egyptian Museum is a breathtaking space designed to impress. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a colossal, 3,200-year-old red granite statue of Ramses II, standing tall at 36 feet and weighing 83 tons, encircled by serene, shallow pools. The atrium, with its soaring ceilings and expansive layout, acts as a grand introduction to Egypt's rich history.

THE ROYAL MUMMIES

The Royal Mummies, while not currently housed within the Grand Egyptian Museum, are a crucial aspect of Egypt's royal history and were initially intended to be a highlight. These remarkably preserved remains of pharaohs and queens from the New Kingdom offer an unparalleled glimpse into the lives and physical appearances of ancient Egyptian rulers. The discovery of these mummies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was a monumental archaeological event. Their intricate preservation techniques and the artifacts found within their tombs have provided invaluable insights into royal burial customs, religious beliefs, and the advanced skills of ancient Egyptian embalmers. While awaiting their eventual display within the GEM's planned galleries, the Royal Mummies remain a testament to the power and longevity of Egypt's pharaonic dynasties.

TUTANKHAMUN’S TREASURES

Tutankhamun's Treasures, destined to be a centerpiece of the Grand Egyptian Museum, represent an unparalleled archaeological discovery. Unearthed from his nearly intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings, these thousands of artifacts offer an extraordinary snapshot of a young pharaoh's life and the opulent funerary practices of the 18th Dynasty.

Among the treasures are gilded chariots, elaborate furniture, stunning jewelry, and the iconic solid gold funerary mask. The sheer craftsmanship and artistic detail of these objects speak volumes about the wealth and skill of ancient Egyptian artisans. Displayed together, Tutankhamun's Treasures will provide an immersive and awe-inspiring experience, allowing visitors to connect directly with the splendor of Egypt's golden age and the enigmatic boy-king.

THE GEM GARDENS AND VIEWS

The Grand Egyptian Museum extends its grandeur beyond its indoor exhibits with thoughtfully designed gardens and breathtaking views. These outdoor spaces offer a serene counterpoint to the museum's vast collection, providing areas for relaxation and contemplation. Landscaped with indigenous plants, the gardens aim to create a tranquil environment that echoes the natural beauty of Egypt.

Strategically positioned viewing platforms within the gardens offer spectacular panoramic vistas of the Giza pyramids. This deliberate integration of the ancient wonders with the modern museum design creates a powerful connection between past and present. Visitors can soak in the iconic skyline, capturing memorable photographs and reflecting on the enduring legacy of Egyptian civilization within a contemporary setting. The GEM's gardens and views are an integral part of the overall visitor experience, enhancing the sense of place and historical context.
